Ep. #9 ~ Addressing Human Poverty: The Calgary Mustard Seed

Calgary Mustard Seed.jpg

I have truly been excited to publish this podcast after talking with Derrick & Britney a few weeks ago! We met downtown in the newly constructed building of the Seeds step up program. While the 1st & 2nd floors are for administration & education spaces, the remaining several floors are dedicated to small apartments and social spaces where residents can meet & grow in community.

Over the past 15 years I have been involved with the Seed, both volunteering on my own & leading groups there. Perhaps one of my most fondest memories I have is serving supper downtown with a group of friends while watching game 6 of the 2004 Stanley Cup Series where the Calgary Flames lost (controversially) in overtime against the Lightening. Crowded into the dinning space, we watched the small tv's & no matter who scored, Flames or Lightening, everyone cheered! Later, as the night became longer, we snuck upstairs with a few of the residents & watched the remaining of the game in their small social space. A fond memory indeed!

Our talk a few weeks ago delved into the many issues of human poverty & the need for social justice in our society. What I found is a desire to explore more, dig deeper & I hope, have many more future conversations in the issues of poverty & social justice. If it is one thing that I have learned during my time in the Seed, it is that poverty & vulnerability affects all of us!

So without exhausting you in my writing, I hope this conversation inspires you in the wonder of striving to overcome, & serve within, an equity of human poverty!
